Grade 7/5’s environmental project in the Czech Republic

From October 8 to 12, 2012, grade 7/5 together with their teachers Ms. Geppert and Ms. Haupt and some Czech students stayed in the Czech Republic in order to carry out an environmental project. After a three-hour ride, we arrived at Lesná. On the first day we tried out geocaching in the forest. After all this walking we had dinner, which is a real feast in the Czech Republic. After dinner we went to the second house where we played games and created our profiles in German and Czech

The next day, we got up at 8. Breakfast was at 8.30. We met at the second house at 9 to start the morning session. We played inside and outside the house. Lunch was at 12. Each meal consisted of a soup and the main dish. After lunch we had a one-hour break. Then we went on a hike. While hiking we sketched a map of our route. After that we had dinner.

On Wednesday, we started off to Chomutov. After a short bus ride, we had one hour of spare time in the city. Then we went to the zoo. A guide led us through the park. We all liked the animals very much. We completed a worksheet during that tour.

On Thursday, we were in the second house again, where we learned a lot about red ants, for instance that they turn black in the winter. After lunch, we hiked to the Helena-Waterfalls.

On our way there we saw an anthill. We put a piece of banana on top of it and the ants started to explore it immediately.

After that we went on to take water samples from a little creek. Then we looked for all kind of insects in the forest and in the water. We finally arrived at the falls. In the evening, we solved project tasks dealing with the forest in German and Czech. Afterwards, we still had a little party.

On Friday, our mentor Pavel showed us his long-eared owl. The owl had a blind spot of over 7 inches. Later he let his hawk Teqina out of the car. He supplied it with a transmitter so that it could fly freely. We took some photos on the field. Teqina always came immediately when Pavel whistled. At 1.30 pm, after lunch, we started off on our journey home.
