Be Smart – Don’t Start!

The state-wide competition “Be smart - don’t start” gives students an incentive to avoid starting a smoking habit. Those grades, which do not smoke at all during the entire competition, receive a certificate for their successful participation. To be “smoke-free” means that students in each grade must say “no” to cigarettes, e-cigarettes, shishas, tobacco, and nicotine in every form.

Our grade, 7/1 participated in this year’s competition and we wrote a song called “Relax the Lips.” The song highlights the harmfulness of smoking and tries to show that smoking doesn’t make you cooler. Everyone in our grade was involved in developing the song. We composed the song’s lyrics in many small steps and then we perfected the lyrics again in small groups. We also thought about how we could best get our message across. Once we finished the lyrics, we added instruments and choreography to our song and rehearsed our song.

During our rehearsals, we edited the song further since we had some doubts about certain parts of the song and we also noticed some places where we could improve the song. After 5 months of hard work, our song was finally complete! On May 29th, we performed our song (which we also performed at the school fair) live at the Hygiene Museum in Dresden where the Saxony-wide celebration of the end of the competition took place. We received a prize of 100 Euro for our creative contribution!
