Student Lecture in Chemistry at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg

Does the spark of inspiration lead to concrete knowledge?

The 24th annual lecture series “Experimentation in Freiberg” took place at TU Bergakademie from September 1st to the 4th. Matyáš Přibyl and Sandra Herzig, from the 12th grade at our Gymnasium, were in attendance.

The four day long event began with the presentation of an experiment connected to this theme of “the spark of inspiration.” Many impressive experiments were demonstrated which might not otherwise be seen in school. The experiments were subsequently divided among the five institutes (Inorganic, Organic, Physical, Technical, and Analytic) and the participants had the opportunity to choose to perform different experiments from the various fields of chemistry. Possible experiments included the determination of water hardness and the analysis of fluids and solids with various redox-reactions, among others. Additionally, the seminar included a tour of the teaching and research mine of TU Freiberg, the “rich pit,” a round-table discussion with the Freiberger chemistry students and graduates, as well as a picnic where students, professors, and of course our participants could mingle and chat.

The accommodations of the participants were provided by nearby guesthouses, where they could also exchange experiences outside of the university setting.

The days in Freiberg were an interesting experience and we had a lot of fun.
